Background

Frances Lansing, born in New York City, Studied at the University of Virginia, then at MIT in Boston, for research and work in language acquisition 1969-1973 Moving to Florence, Italy 1973.
Frances and Yates, etching 1973

In Florence her first art making experience is with the artists Giuseppe Gattuso and Dennis Olsen at the Studio of Santa Reparata where she specializes in etching. She studies Art History at Villa Schifanoia in Florence, painting at Carnegie Mellon University (M.F.A.) and teaches drawing and design at the Syracuse University and Kent State University programs in Florence.

In the ’70s her interests center on photography and etching. Gradually her prints become too complicated in color and texture for traditional means, causing her to explore similar surface and color concerns in painting. In the ’80’s experimental painting techniques with various oils, fresco pigments and emulsions lead to her adoption of bees’ wax encaustic (hot wax) in 1989, realizing large colorful landscapes on wooden panels.

In the last few years Lansing has made her home in the Crete Senese where her husband, painter Sheppard Craige, has designed and constructed a park, the Bosco della Ragnaia. This creation in the town of San Giovanni d’Asso, has become a source for inspiration and study in Lansing’s paintings. It is both the motivation and site for a new series of sculpture by the artist in terracotta and bronze.
